Pixel 11 Ships With the First 2nm Smartphone Chip

Google launched the Pixel 11 lineup with Tensor G6, the first 2nm smartphone chip to reach consumers, undercutting Samsung by $400.

Google held its Made by Google event in New York City on August 12, 2026, and the headline announcement wasn't really about a phone. It was about a manufacturing process. The Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold all run on Tensor G6, which industry reports describe as the first smartphone processor to reach consumers built on TSMC's 2-nanometer manufacturing node, a genuine first for the entire Android ecosystem.

Preorders opened the same day at 10 a.m. Eastern, with the base Pixel 11 starting at $899 and general availability set for August 20. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold, priced at $1,899, won't ship until October, roughly six to eight weeks behind the rest of the lineup.

A Chip Milestone Buried Inside a Phone Launch

What makes Tensor G6 genuinely significant isn't just the node number. It's the transistor architecture underneath it. The chip is the first major Android smartphone processor to use Gate-All-Around transistor design in commercial production, a real structural departure from the FinFET transistors that have powered essentially every smartphone chip through the 5-nanometer generation and most 3-nanometer designs. In a FinFET transistor, the gate material wraps around three sides of the conducting silicon channel. Gate-All-Around wraps it on all four, a change that allows better control over current flow at smaller scales and is one of the reasons chipmakers have been racing to bring GAA into production as node sizes keep shrinking.

The practical result, according to Google, is a chip built primarily for efficiency rather than raw benchmark bragging rights: 25% faster web browsing and 15% faster app launches compared to last year's Tensor G5, alongside 50% more on-chip TPU compute specifically for AI processing. Google also switched its modem supplier for this generation, moving from Samsung's Exynos modems to a MediaTek M90, a change aimed at improving connectivity while further reducing power draw.

The Software Layer Riding on Top of the New Silicon

Google used the additional AI processing headroom to introduce two new features built specifically around Tensor G6's capabilities. Gemini Intelligence, the company's on-device AI layer for this generation, is designed to handle multi-step tasks and incorporate visual context directly from the camera and screen, rather than responding to isolated text prompts alone. Magic Capture, a new camera feature, records a rolling timeline of what the camera sees and uses the chip's on-device processing to automatically select and save the best individual moments, built around facial expressions, movement, and timing, aimed squarely at parents and pet owners trying to capture a single good frame out of a chaotic scene.

This kind of on-device AI push is consistent with where Google's broader AI strategy has been heading under its restructured leadership team, which now has direct operational control over exactly the kind of Gemini feature rollout that Pixel hardware depends on to differentiate itself from cheaper Android competitors running similar Qualcomm silicon.

A Watch That Shipped Without Its Own Headline Feature

Not every product at Wednesday's event landed cleanly. The new Pixel Watch 5, priced at $399, shipped without day-one access to Gemini, according to TechTimes' reporting on the launch, an odd gap for a company putting so much weight on AI as its central differentiator this generation. Google also introduced a handful of smaller hardware additions alongside the core phone lineup: Pixel Glow, an RGB LED notification light built directly into the rear camera bar, a UWB tracking accessory called Pixel Tag, a preview of a feature called Googlebooks, and an early tease of intelligent eyewear, a category Samsung has already moved into more concretely with its own Google-built Android XR smart glasses unveiled at its own event weeks earlier.

The Pricing Fight With Samsung, One Line Item at a Time

Google's pricing decision reads as a direct shot at its biggest Android rival. At $899, the base Pixel 11 undercuts Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra, priced at $1,299, by a full $400, while Google is positioning the Tensor G6's computational photography pipeline as broadly comparable to what Samsung's flagship offers. That's a meaningfully more aggressive pricing stance than Google has typically taken against Samsung's top-tier devices, and it lands directly against a competitor that had already set its own foldable and wearable pricing earlier in the summer.

The broader manufacturing race sitting underneath both companies' phones is worth noting too. Landing a 2-nanometer chip into mass production requires exactly the kind of advanced foundry capacity that's become the industry's scarcest resource this year, the same capacity crunch that's been driving Intel's push to land outside customers for its own foundry business as it tries to compete with TSMC and Samsung's manufacturing arms. Google securing early 2-nanometer capacity from TSMC specifically, ahead of most of its Android competitors, is itself a supply chain achievement separate from anything the phone's actual specs reveal.

The Question the Keynote Didn't Fully Answer

Reviewers covering Wednesday's keynote framed the central open question plainly: whether Google's software integration argument, and specifically its on-device Gemini AI capabilities, actually justifies asking consumers to pay a premium over previous-generation Pixel phones that already run a broadly similar Android experience. That's not a question a keynote presentation can answer on its own. It gets answered gradually, over the weeks and months after a phone actually ships, as real users decide whether Magic Capture and Gemini Intelligence change how they use their phone day to day, or whether the new features amount to marginal improvements dressed up as a generational leap.

What's harder to dispute is the manufacturing achievement sitting underneath all of it. Whatever the market ultimately decides about Pixel 11 sales, Google becoming the first company to bring a 2-nanometer, Gate-All-Around smartphone chip to actual consumers is a genuine milestone in the broader chip industry's roadmap, one that Samsung, Qualcomm, and every other smartphone chip designer will now be racing to match on their own timelines.
