Samsung Enters Smart Glasses With Google-Built Eyewear
Samsung unveiled its first-ever smart glasses at Galaxy Unpacked, built with Google's Android XR, alongside pricier new foldables.
Samsung unveiled six new devices at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22, 2026. Five of them were predictable, incremental updates to phones and watches the company ships every year. The sixth was something Samsung has never made before: a pair of glasses.
Called Galaxy Glasses, the device marks Samsung's first entry into AI-powered smart eyewear, built on Google's Android XR platform and designed in partnership with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. It's a meaningfully different kind of announcement than another Fold or Flip refresh, and it puts Samsung directly into a category Meta has spent two years building a real lead in with its Ray-Ban smart glasses line.
Samsung's First Bet on Your Face, Not Your Pocket
Every other Galaxy device is an update. Galaxy Glasses is a new bet on where computing happens next. Samsung isn't going it alone here, which is itself telling. Rather than building its own AI wearable platform from scratch, Samsung partnered with Google for the underlying Android XR software and brought in two established eyewear brands to handle the part hardware companies have historically gotten wrong: making the thing look like something a person would actually choose to wear in public.
That partnership structure mirrors how Samsung has approached its phone AI strategy more broadly this year, leaning on Google's Gemini models rather than building competing infrastructure internally. Applying the same playbook to wearables suggests Samsung sees smart glasses less as a product it needs to own outright and more as a category it can't afford to sit out of, even if that means sharing control of the core technology.
The glasses themselves are the least detailed announcement from Tuesday's event by design. Samsung didn't share pricing, and the product won't ship until fall 2026, months after everything else announced at Unpacked. That gap suggests the hardware and software integration wasn't fully locked down at launch time, a reasonable position for a genuinely new product category rather than an annual refresh.
The Foldable Strategy Finally Splits in Two
The rest of Tuesday's announcements followed a more familiar pattern, but with one structural change worth noting. Samsung has split its foldable lineup for the first time, moving away from a single flagship Fold toward two distinct models built for different use cases. The Galaxy Z Fold8 targets content consumption with a wider, more tablet-like shape, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra keeps the more familiar Fold form factor and adds Samsung's highest-end camera, battery, and productivity hardware.
The Fold8 Ultra specifically pushes into genuinely new engineering territory: an 8-inch main display and 6.5-inch cover screen packed into a device that's just 4.1 millimeters thick when unfolded and weighs 215 grams, making it the slimmest Galaxy Z Fold Samsung has ever shipped. Its camera system centers on a 200-megapixel main sensor now capable of capturing full-resolution HDR images, paired with a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom. That's a serious camera upgrade layered onto a device that's also thinner than its predecessor, which is not a combination manufacturers usually pull off in the same generation.
A Preview of How the Glasses Might Actually Work
Details on Galaxy Glasses' actual functionality came less from Samsung's own presentation and more from Google's side of the partnership. Juston Payne, Google's XR product management lead, described the navigation experience built into the platform in an interview with Tom's Guide, calling the audio experience for navigation fantastic. According to Payne, the glasses use an onboard camera to localize the wearer's position and orientation, allowing the system to give contextual directional cues rather than the generic turn-by-turn prompts a phone-based map app provides.
That's a specific, differentiated feature rather than a vague AI promise, and it points toward what Samsung and Google are actually trying to compete on: not raw display quality or processing power, but genuinely useful hands-free interaction that doesn't require pulling out a phone. Whether that translates into a product people actually wear daily, the way Meta's Ray-Ban glasses have found a real audience, depends on details Samsung still hasn't disclosed, starting with the price.
Everything Costs More This Year, and Not by Choice
One detail cuts across every device Samsung announced Tuesday: prices are up across the board compared to last year's equivalent models. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra starts at $2,099.99 for the base 256GB configuration, climbing to $2,699.99 for the top-tier 1TB model. The Z Flip8 starts at $1,199.99. The Galaxy Watch9 starts at $379.99 for the Bluetooth model, with the Watch Ultra2 priced at $699.99.
That across-the-board increase isn't purely a Samsung margin decision. It lands directly on top of the memory chip price surge that's been rippling through the entire consumer electronics industry this year, driven by AI's voracious demand for the same memory components that go into phones, laptops, and wearables. Samsung's own semiconductor division is one of the companies profiting from that price increase, even as it makes Samsung's own consumer hardware more expensive to build and sell, the same tension already visible in the company's recent US restructuring.
Why the Timing Puts Samsung in a Three-Way Race
Stepping back, Tuesday's event places Samsung squarely between two much larger AI ecosystem battles playing out simultaneously. Meta has a real head start in consumer smart glasses adoption. Google needs hardware partners to prove Android XR is a viable platform rather than just a demo reel, which is exactly the role Samsung is stepping into. Samsung, meanwhile, gets a genuinely new product category to sell into just as its core phone and foldable business faces rising component costs and a maturing market.
None of that guarantees Galaxy Glasses succeeds where other smart glasses attempts have quietly failed over the past decade. But the fact that Samsung is willing to launch a completely new hardware category, built jointly with Google rather than solo, at the exact moment its established product lines are getting more expensive to make, says something about how seriously the company is treating the shift toward wearable AI as the next real battleground, not just an experiment on the side.
