iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Live at $1,999, Ships Oct. 23

Apple's first foldable iPhone opened pre-orders today at $1,999 in 70+ countries. Shipping dates slipped to January within 30 minutes as supply constraints bite.

Pre-orders for Apple's first foldable iPhone opened this morning at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, and within 30 minutes the device was already showing delivery estimates well into January 2027. That gap between launch day and actual availability is the most revealing detail about how the iPhone Duo's first day played out โ€” not the price, not the specs, but the speed at which demand burned through whatever Apple had allocated for October 23.

Apple confirmed pre-orders are live in more than 70 countries simultaneously, with the device shipping October 23. A second wave of 28 more countries gets access October 30. It runs iOS 27.1 exclusively at launch โ€” a Duo-specific software build Apple has not released to older devices.

What $1,999 Actually Buys

The base model starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. The full pricing ladder: 512GB for $2,199, 1TB for $2,599, and 2TB for $3,199. Apple also lists installment pricing from $83.29 per month over 24 months, and carrier trade-in deals of up to $1,200 off make the effective entry price significantly lower for users upgrading from a recent iPhone. Two colors are available: Star White and Night Sky.

That $1,999 entry price came in below what many analysts and supply chain watchers had forecast. Pre-launch estimates from multiple firms ranged from $2,000 to $2,500, with some pushing higher given the novel manufacturing complexity. Apple priced it at the floor of that range, which puts it below Samsung's flagship Galaxy Z Fold 8 at its US launch price. Whether that pricing will hold under the weight of thin margins and constrained yields is a different question.

The hardware itself: a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display unfolds into a 7.6-inch OLED inner screen. At 5.2mm when fully open, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has shipped. At 254 grams, it is also the heaviest. Folded, the device closes to 11.3mm โ€” thicker than any current iPhone Pro, but comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The A20 Pro and What Is New About It

The chip is the A20 Pro, built on TSMC's 2nm process. Apple says it runs a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine โ€” the dual Neural Engine being the notable hardware addition over the A19 Pro. Apple claims 40% faster GPU performance and 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro. The dual Neural Engine is specifically designed to handle the split-screen, multi-app workflow that a 7.6-inch inner display invites: running two AI-assisted tasks simultaneously without the lag penalty that a single neural accelerator would produce under that load.

On cameras, both rear units are 48MP โ€” a Fusion Main and a Fusion Ultra Wide. There is an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen for video calls in tablet mode and a Center Stage camera on the outer screen for standard use. Apple rated battery life at up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display, which is a notable claim for a device this thin. Independent testing had not been published as of today.

The inner display uses a custom polymer Apple describes as 40% stiffer than materials in other foldable devices. Crease visibility on foldable OLED panels has been a persistent complaint about Android competitors, and Apple has been working on this problem for years; whether the polymer achieves a genuinely crease-free result in real use will be one of the first review findings that matters.

Why Supply Is the Real Story Today

The pre-order surge translating to January delivery within 30 minutes is not a surprise to anyone who has been watching the supply chain. Analyst Jeff Pu, in a research note cited by 9to5Mac, revised his 2026 iPhone Duo shipment estimate down to 6 million units from an earlier 7 million, citing hinge manufacturing constraints. For context, Pu estimates Apple will ship approximately 72 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units by year end โ€” roughly 12 times the Duo estimate.

The underlying manufacturing problem is the hinge. Foxconn's assembly yield rate stood at approximately 60% as of mid-September, according to a report by Chinese outlet Jiemian News. Under Apple's quality thresholds, that yield rate meant a significant share of assembled units were being rejected before reaching the packaging stage. The hinge mechanism itself is a structure of more than 100 components, and it went through late-stage design revisions after early tests with Liquid Metal alloys encountered problems. Samsung Display, which supplies the foldable OLED panels, has also reportedly faced delivery delays.

Apple's global production target for 2026 sits between 6 and 8 million units, with some estimates pushing to 10 million if yields improve. Either figure is a fraction of what a standard iPhone Pro model ships. Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani appeared on CNBC's Squawk on the Street and said Apple would sell every iPhone Duo it can manufacture in the first six months โ€” framing the constraint as purely supply-side, not demand.

The supply situation creates a specific window for Samsung. Samsung's memory and display divisions have both been on a strong run this year, and its Galaxy Z Fold line has years of foldable manufacturing experience behind it. Buyers who want a foldable device and cannot get a Duo before the holidays may consider the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is currently in stock. Reports from ithinkdiff.com indicate Samsung is even weighing an accelerated timeline for the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 in direct response to the Duo's launch.

Software: What iOS 27.1 Adds for the Form Factor

The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, a software version Apple has not released to any other device. The key additions are centered on the larger canvas: Split View multitasking lets two full-size apps run side by side on the 7.6-inch inner display, with a reimagined app switcher that works differently depending on whether the phone is folded or open. The OS also adapts dynamically to fold angle โ€” when the device is partially open, the interface reorients to use the angle, similar to how Samsung's Flex Mode works but integrated deeper into the iOS layout engine.

StandBy mode, Apple's lock-screen ambient display feature introduced in iOS 17, now works on both displays without requiring the phone to be charging. That means the Duo propped on a desk in landscape mode shows widgets and a clock on the inner screen without any cable attached โ€” a genuinely useful addition for a device you might set down open more often than folded.

The Wider Hardware Week

The iPhone Duo is not the only device crossing from announcement into availability this week. The Nvidia RTX Spark-powered laptop lineup that Microsoft and Nvidia unveiled earlier this month began shipping today, putting two of October's biggest hardware stories into customers' hands on the same day. Apple has a second hardware event scheduled for October 28, where a touchscreen MacBook Pro and M6 iMac are expected. The month is unusually dense with launches, and the Duo has to compete for consumer attention even within Apple's own October calendar.

The $1,999 price undercuts pre-launch forecasts. The supply chain will decide whether the product reaches anything like mass scale before the holiday quarter ends. That is the tension the iPhone Duo is launching with: strong demand, constrained supply, and a manufacturing learning curve that Foxconn and Apple have months of work left to climb.
