What a thousand years of bones can tell you
Every animal bone pulled from an English archaeological dig carries a small piece of economic history embedded in it: how old the animal was when it died, whether it was worked hard as a draft animal, whether it was raised primarily for meat, milk, or wool. Individually, a single bone tells you almost nothing. Collect enough of them, from enough sites, across enough centuries, and a much larger story starts to emerge. A study published September 2 in PLOS One, led by Matilda Holmes of the University of Leicester and David Orton of the University of York, does exactly that, tracing a full millennium of English animal farming, from the year 400 through 1400, using bone data pulled from 460 archaeological sites across the country.
The picture that emerges isn't one of steady, gradual change. It's a story of repeated reinvention, where English farmers shifted how they used cattle and sheep again and again as population pressure, trade networks, and land use all moved beneath them.
Building a dataset most researchers couldn't assemble alone
The scale of this study is what makes it possible to see patterns invisible in any single excavation. Holmes and her colleagues drew on the Feeding Anglo-Saxon England project's large existing dataset, spanning 460 sites and a full millennium of English history, a scope that would be essentially impossible for any single archaeological team to generate from scratch. That kind of aggregation work, pulling together decades of separately excavated bone assemblages into one comparable dataset, is unglamorous but essential; it's the archaeological equivalent of combining hundreds of small local weather stations into a single, continuous climate record.
The payoff of that scale is precision about timing. Historically, researchers have understood in broad strokes that medieval English farming changed over the centuries, but pinning down exactly when specific shifts happened, and how quickly, has remained genuinely difficult. With bone evidence from hundreds of sites spanning a thousand years, Holmes's team could finally trace those transitions with much sharper chronological resolution than piecemeal, site-by-site archaeology typically allows.
A story shaped by population and trade, not just taste
The study's central finding is straightforward to state but significant in its implications: as England's population expanded and its trade networks grew more complex across the medieval period, farmers repeatedly adjusted how they used cattle and sheep to produce food and raw materials. That's a meaningfully different framing than assuming medieval agriculture simply got more efficient over time in some linear fashion. Instead, the data shows farming priorities genuinely shifting in response to demographic and economic pressure, sometimes toward one animal product, sometimes toward another, depending on what the moment demanded.
The research confirmed several previously suspected trends while sharpening the timeline behind them, including the earlier-than-assumed rise of sheep farming and the fluctuating role of cattle used specifically for draft labor, meaning plowing, hauling, and general farm work rather than meat or dairy production. That draft-cattle fluctuation is a particularly telling detail: it suggests medieval farmers weren't locked into a single use for their cattle herds, but actively reallocated animals between labor and food production as circumstances changed, a level of adaptive management that older, less granular archaeological evidence hadn't been able to demonstrate clearly.
Why sheep farming's early rise matters
The finding that sheep farming rose earlier than previously understood connects to one of medieval England's most consequential later economic developments: the wool trade that would eventually make English wool one of medieval Europe's most valuable commodities, fueling trade networks stretching across the continent. Establishing that the shift toward sheep began earlier than researchers had assumed pushes back the timeline for when England's agricultural economy started laying the groundwork for that later wool-driven prosperity, suggesting the transition wasn't a rapid response to a single trigger but a longer, more gradual reorientation of the rural economy.
That kind of revised timeline matters for historians well beyond agricultural specialists, since England's medieval wool trade shaped everything from the country's tax base to its diplomatic relationships with wool-buying regions on the continent. A clearer picture of when sheep farming actually began expanding gives economic historians a firmer foundation for understanding how that later wool economy actually took root, rather than simply appearing fully formed.
What the researchers are careful not to claim
Holmes and her colleagues are notably candid about the limits of what this dataset can currently show. The paper explicitly flags significant unresolved variation between individual archaeological sites, meaning the broad national trends the study identifies don't necessarily play out uniformly across every region or settlement type. A monastery's animal economy, a market town's, and a rural village's likely diverged from each other in ways this aggregate dataset can hint at but not fully resolve.
The researchers also point to a more technical limitation worth taking seriously: the lack of standardized methods for determining the sex of ancient domesticated animals from skeletal remains. That's a meaningful gap, since knowing whether a herd skewed male or female carries direct implications for how it was actually being used, dairy production requires retaining female animals, while draft labor and much meat production historically relied more heavily on males, information that could sharpen the study's conclusions considerably once methodological standards catch up.
A pattern with echoes in England's landscape today
There's a useful parallel between this study and other recent research into how England's rural landscape has shifted over time in response to changing pressures, including an 11-year Norfolk study that watched abandoned farmland spontaneously transform into a thriving wildflower meadow once agricultural use stopped. Both studies, working across very different timescales, one spanning a millennium of active animal husbandry, the other tracking a single field over roughly a decade of abandonment, point toward the same underlying truth: England's rural landscape has never been a fixed, static backdrop. It's been continuously reshaped by whatever combination of economic pressure, population change, and land management priorities happened to be operating at the time, whether that's medieval farmers reallocating cattle between plow and pasture, or a single Norfolk field left alone long enough for orchids to reclaim it.
Where this research goes next
Holmes and Orton frame their findings as a foundation rather than a finished picture, explicitly flagging areas for future work, particularly around resolving site-to-site variation and improving the methodological tools available for sexing ancient animal remains. Given how much clearer this study's timeline became simply by aggregating existing data across hundreds of sites, the next meaningful advance in this field likely depends less on new excavations and more on refining how researchers analyze the enormous body of bone evidence England's archaeological record has already accumulated, a reminder that some of the most significant historical discoveries come not from digging up something new, but from finally looking carefully at what's already been unearthed.
