Apple Ships Gemini-Powered Siri, Blocks EU and China

Apple's iOS 27 brings a Google Gemini-powered Siri, its biggest overhaul in 15 years, but blocks the EU and China entirely.

Siri has carried Apple's own name and Apple's own technology since it launched in 2011. Starting September 14, 2026, when iOS 27 began rolling out to compatible devices at 10 a.m. Pacific time, that changed. Apple's rebuilt conversational assistant, marketed as Siri AI, now runs on architecture built with Google's Gemini, marking the most significant overhaul in the fifteen-year history of one of Apple's most recognizable products.

That's a meaningfully different kind of concession than Apple's earlier partnerships with Google. Apple has used Google as the default search engine in Safari for years, an arrangement most users never think about because search happens largely invisibly. Siri is the opposite: a visible, voice-driven, constantly-present product that Apple built its own brand identity around for over a decade. Handing its underlying intelligence to a competitor's model is a genuinely public admission that Apple's own AI development couldn't get there fast enough alone.

Apple's Most Visible Product Now Runs on a Rival's AI

The deal underpinning this shift is a multi-year partnership reportedly worth roughly $1 billion annually. According to reporting on the arrangement, Google built a custom Gemini model specifically for Apple, containing approximately 1.2 trillion parameters, about eight times larger than Apple's own previous foundation models. That scale gap helps explain why Apple, despite years of internal AI development, ultimately turned to an outside partner for the version of Siri it was willing to ship broadly.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offered a notably optimistic read on what this partnership could mean for Apple's broader competitive position, saying that if Apple is doing this well without AI, it's worth imagining what happens once it actually has AI working at this level. That's a real bet Apple is now making publicly: that its hardware, ecosystem integration, and design execution can outperform rivals even while running on the same underlying model technology those rivals also use.

What's Actually Different About This Siri

The new Siri goes considerably further than voice commands and basic queries. It can access personal context stored directly on a user's device, including emails, photos, and messages, take actions inside other apps on the user's behalf, and maintain awareness of what's currently on screen to make its responses more contextually relevant. That's a substantial expansion in scope from the Siri most users have interacted with for the past decade, one built around narrow, single-purpose commands rather than genuine contextual reasoning across a person's actual digital life.

Given that roughly 2.5 billion Apple devices are active worldwide, even a modest adoption rate for this new Siri represents, by a wide margin, the largest real-world test any redesigned AI assistant has faced to date, dwarfing the user bases available to competing standalone products.

The Privacy Architecture Apple Is Betting Its Reputation On

Apple's central challenge in this partnership was reconciling Google's AI capability with Apple's own long-standing privacy positioning, built over years of marketing itself as the platform that doesn't sell user data. The solution is Apple's Private Cloud Compute architecture, which the company says de-identifies user requests before they ever reach Google's servers for processing. Under this design, Google cannot see a user's name, contacts, emails, or location attached to any given query, and responses route back through Apple's own infrastructure before reaching the user's device. Apple has also stated that Google is contractually barred from using any Siri interactions to train its own future Gemini models.

Those are meaningful technical and contractual safeguards, assuming they hold up to the kind of independent security research and regulatory scrutiny a partnership this significant is certain to attract in the months ahead. Apple's entire privacy reputation is now riding on that architecture actually working as described, in a product running a rival company's AI model at genuine scale.

A Rollout With Real Limits Attached

Despite the scale of the announcement, Siri AI isn't reaching every eligible user immediately. Access rolls out through a waitlist system rather than becoming available to everyone at once, and the feature launches in English only, with additional languages expected in the following months. iOS 27 itself is available now as a free update for iPhone 11 and later devices, alongside companion updates to iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

Two specific markets are excluded entirely at launch: the European Union and China, both cited for ongoing regulatory reasons. That's a substantial gap for a global product, and it echoes a pattern that's shaped Apple's foldable iPhone Duo launch and other recent hardware rollouts, where regulatory complexity in major markets has repeatedly forced Apple into staggered, market-by-market release strategies rather than simultaneous global availability.

Two Different Countries, Two Different AI Strategies

The China exclusion is particularly notable given Apple's separate, parallel AI strategy there. Apple already secured Chinese regulatory approval to power Apple Intelligence in China through Alibaba's Qwen model rather than Google's Gemini, a necessary workaround since Google's services, including Gemini, remain unavailable inside China entirely. Apple briefly published, then quickly removed, a Chinese-language support guide in early August explaining how Mac users in mainland China could connect Qwen directly to Siri and Apple's Writing Tools, a preview of the market-specific approach Apple is clearly still finalizing.

Taken together, these two threads reveal Apple's actual global AI strategy: rather than building one unified AI backend worldwide, the company is assembling a patchwork of regional partnerships, Gemini for most of the world, Qwen specifically for China, each shaped by whichever regulatory and competitive constraints apply in that particular market.

What $1 Billion a Year Actually Buys Both Companies

For Google, this deal places its AI technology at the center of one of the most valuable consumer hardware ecosystems on Earth, reaching hundreds of millions of iPhone users who might otherwise never directly interact with a Google AI product at all. For Apple, it's a pragmatic acknowledgment that competing on foundation model capability alone wasn't a fight worth having, at least not yet, when the company's actual strength lies in hardware integration, design, and the kind of privacy-focused trust that's helped keep Apple in contention as one of the world's most valuable companies even during a year when AI infrastructure spending has reshaped market leadership repeatedly. Whether that bet pays off depends entirely on whether users experience Siri AI as a genuine leap forward once the waitlist clears and international markets eventually open, rather than simply noticing, as Apple clearly hopes they won't, exactly whose model is doing the thinking underneath the assistant's familiar voice.
