Asian Elephants Show They Can Resist Impulses, Study Finds

CUNY researchers tested 16 elephants in Thailand and found the first evidence of inhibitory control in the species.

Sixteen elephants at a sanctuary in Thailand could see the fruit sitting inside a clear plastic box. They could smell it too, right through the small holes cut into the box's front panel. Every one of them resisted the obvious move: shoving a trunk straight at the fruit through those holes. Instead, they walked around to a side opening they'd been shown earlier, reached in, and got the reward the harder way.

That's the entire setup behind a study published September 9, 2026, in the open-access journal PLOS One, and it's the first time researchers have documented this kind of self-control in elephants at all. The work, led by Hunter College postdoctoral researcher Sydney Hope and CUNY Graduate Center psychology professor Joshua Plotnik, gives a name to something elephant researchers had long suspected but never formally tested: inhibitory control, the ability to override an impulsive but ineffective action in favor of a more deliberate one.

A test borrowed from decades of animal cognition research

The detour task the team used isn't new to science. Researchers have run versions of it on birds, primates, and other mammals for years, typically by making an animal ignore a tempting but blocked path to a treat in favor of an indirect route that actually works. What hadn't happened before this study was running that same paradigm on elephants, despite the species' long-standing reputation for sophisticated problem-solving.

Hope and Plotnik's team tested their 16 Asian elephants at the National Elephant Institute in Thailand, working with collaborators there to design a transparent box study specifically suited to an animal whose main tool for interacting with the world, its trunk, is also its primary sense of smell. That's a meaningful design choice: for an elephant, resisting the pull toward visible, smellable food sitting just centimeters away is a genuinely harder test of impulse control than the same setup would be for a species that relies more on sight alone.

What happened when the researchers moved the goalposts

The most telling part of the experiment came after the elephants had already learned the workaround. Once they consistently used the side opening instead of reaching through the front holes, the researchers rotated the box, moving the functional opening to a new location.

At first, the elephants reverted to old habits, reaching for where the opening used to be. But they corrected the mistake quickly. "We found that, when elephants were faced with a situation in which they needed to suppress an impulsive behavior, either the impulse to reach directly toward a food reward behind a transparent barrier or the impulse to continue using a previously effective technique, they were generally able to suppress the impulse," Hope said, according to a statement from the CUNY Graduate Center.

One detail stood out inside that broader success: older elephants took longer to adjust to the box's new orientation than younger ones did. The researchers noted this could point toward age-related cognitive decline, similar to patterns documented in aging humans and other animals, though they were careful to say further study would be needed before drawing that conclusion firmly.

Why a psychology lab cares this much about elephant trunks

Plotnik has spent nearly two decades studying elephant intelligence, personality, and social behavior in Thailand, and this study sits inside a broader research effort examining how elephants make decisions, assess risk, and adapt to environments increasingly reshaped by human activity. Inhibitory control isn't just an interesting party trick for a large-brained mammal; it's considered a core building block of the kind of flexible, social problem-solving elephants are already famous for.

"Although we are beginning to understand how intelligent elephants are, we still know very little about their capacity for inhibitory control," Hope told Popular Science. "Understanding elephant inhibitory control will help us understand how this aspect of cognition may have evolved across species, including humans."

The conservation angle behind the cognition research

This wouldn't be a particularly unusual academic finding if it stopped at animal psychology. It doesn't. Plotnik's broader research program has already found that elephants living near human communities tend to take more risks and explore unfamiliar situations more readily than elephants elsewhere, a behavioral pattern that may help explain why certain individuals repeatedly enter farmland and end up in conflict with people, according to reporting on the study's wider context.

Human-elephant conflict is a serious and growing problem across parts of Asia, often triggered when elephants navigate around barriers like electric fences to reach agricultural land. Hope pointed directly at that connection: "One major threat to Asian elephants is human-elephant conflict, often occurring when elephants navigate around barriers." Understanding how well, and how quickly, elephants can override an impulsive response to a barrier has direct implications for designing deterrents that actually work, rather than ones elephants simply learn to route around through trial and error.

What comes next for elephant cognition research

Plotnik framed the bigger goal in practical terms: "The more we understand about how elephants think, make decisions about risk, and adapt to human-driven environmental change, the better we can predict 'what they'll do next' and the better designed our strategies for human-elephant coexistence can be."

That's a notably applied ambition for a study built around a plastic box and some fruit. But the logic holds together: a deterrent designed without accounting for how quickly and flexibly elephants can rethink a blocked path is a deterrent elephants will likely defeat within a season or two. This study doesn't solve human-elephant conflict on its own, but it gives conservationists a clearer, evidence-based starting point for building mitigation strategies around how elephants actually think, rather than assumptions about how they might.
