Nvidia Weighs $250B Backstop for OpenAI's Ohio Site
Nvidia is in talks to guarantee $250 billion in financing for OpenAI's Ohio data center, and Wall Street is calling it circular.
A decommissioned uranium-enrichment site fifty miles south of Columbus, Ohio, is about to become the center of a financing arrangement large enough to make Wall Street nervous. The Wall Street Journal reported late Sunday, July 26, 2026, that Nvidia is in talks to provide roughly $250 billion in financial guarantees for OpenAI, backing a 10-gigawatt data center campus that SoftBank's energy subsidiary, SB Energy, is building on the site in Pike County. Nvidia's stock fell 4.45% the following Monday. Investors, it turns out, had questions.
The full project, including the Nvidia chips that would eventually fill it, is expected to cost more than $500 billion, making it the largest data center development ever announced. Terms haven't been finalized, and multiple outlets covering the talks note the deal could still fall apart.
What $250 Billion Actually Buys
The mechanics matter here, because this isn't Nvidia writing OpenAI a check. According to people familiar with the discussions cited by CNBC and Reuters, the $250 billion figure applies specifically to lease and construction financing, the debt SB Energy needs to raise to actually build the facility. It doesn't cover the chips that would eventually run inside it. That's a separate, parallel negotiation, one the Journal reported could add another $350 billion to Nvidia's total exposure if it also agrees to help finance OpenAI's hardware purchases directly.
Nvidia has already put real money into OpenAI once, a $30 billion investment made earlier. A backstop of this size would be a fundamentally different kind of commitment: not an equity stake, but a guarantee that lets lenders extend financing to a company, OpenAI, that doesn't currently qualify for investment-grade credit on its own. The arrangement effectively asks lenders to underwrite Nvidia's balance sheet rather than a single AI campus tied to one unprofitable tenant, which is precisely why it can unlock financing OpenAI couldn't secure independently.
Where the Power Comes From, and Who Controls It
The Ohio site itself carries its own layer of government involvement. The land sits on federal property, and the power supplying it is being funded through a separate arrangement with Japan, part of a broader trade deal in which Japan agreed to invest $33 billion in a natural-gas power project on the site in exchange for lower US tariffs. The two countries are set to share proceeds from power sales until Japan recovers its investment, after which ownership terms shift. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has a direct role in deciding which companies actually get access to that power, and in March, Lutnick, SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright jointly broke ground on the complex.
At full capacity, the campus would draw roughly 10 gigawatts, an amount CNBC's analysis of Energy Information Administration data puts at close to the annual electricity consumption of 8 million US households. The first phase, an 800-megawatt segment, is targeted to come online in 2028. OpenAI would sign a 20-year lease for the space, a commitment length that only makes sense if the company, and the underlying demand for its products, is still growing at a comparable scale a decade or two from now.
Why OpenAI Needs Nvidia's Name on the Paperwork
For OpenAI, landing this kind of backstop represents something bigger than a single facility. It would mark the company's first real step toward controlling its own AI infrastructure directly, rather than renting compute capacity from Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle, the arrangement it's relied on to date. Owning infrastructure outright, rather than leasing capacity from other cloud providers, changes OpenAI's cost structure and gives it more control over how quickly it can scale, assuming it can actually finance the buildout.
For Nvidia, the logic runs in the opposite but equally self-interested direction. A guarantee this size locks in years of guaranteed chip demand from one of its largest customers, insulating Nvidia against the risk that OpenAI's growth slows or that cheaper alternatives, including a wave of capable open-weight models out of China, erode OpenAI's pricing power and, with it, its appetite for more Nvidia hardware. SoftBank and OpenAI had already announced plans earlier this year to jointly invest $1 billion in SB Energy, so Sunday's report extends a relationship the two companies were already building, rather than introducing an entirely new one.
The Word Wall Street Keeps Using
What actually spooked investors Monday wasn't the size of the number. It was the shape of the arrangement. Nvidia backstopping financing for a project that guarantees future demand for Nvidia's own chips, built by a SoftBank subsidiary in which SoftBank is also an OpenAI investor, on land where the US government controls power access, is the kind of tightly interlocking structure that critics have started calling circular financing: each participant's commitment depends on the others following through, with real cash changing hands at some steps and guarantees standing in for cash at others.
That's not necessarily evidence of fraud or bad faith. Vendor financing, where suppliers help customers afford the supplier's own products, is a decades-old practice across capital-intensive industries. But at this scale, with players this large and interconnected, any weak link, a slowdown in OpenAI's revenue growth, a shift in AI demand, a change in the underlying economics of running frontier models, has more room to cascade through multiple companies simultaneously rather than staying contained to one.
What Happens If the Deal Falls Apart
Every report on these talks includes the same caveat: nothing is finalized, and the negotiations could still collapse before a deal is signed. That uncertainty is itself informative. A financing structure this large, built around one company's credit standing behind another company's decades-long lease commitment, isn't a formality to be rubber-stamped. It requires genuine confidence, from Nvidia's board, from SB Energy's lenders, and implicitly from the US and Japanese governments overseeing the land and power arrangements, that OpenAI's growth trajectory justifies locking in this level of exposure for the next twenty years. Whether that confidence holds through the coming months of negotiation, or whether Monday's stock reaction was an early signal that the market's patience with circular AI financing structures is running thinner than the deal-makers assumed, is the question this story leaves open far more than it answers.
