It's Anthropic actively seeking out a rival's infrastructure because its own compute situation has gotten tight enough to justify an unusual partnership.

The evidence for that tightness is already public. Anthropic has had to cap how much users can interact with its top-tier models, including Claude Fable, specifically because of GPU supply constraints. That's not a hypothetical bottleneck. It's a live product limitation Anthropic's customers are experiencing right now, and it's happening while the company's annualized revenue has grown from roughly $9 billion at the end of 2025 to around $30 billion today. Anthropic isn't short on demand. It's short on the physical chips needed to serve that demand at the quality level its customers expect.

Why Meta Wants to Be a Landlord, Not Just a Tenant

Meta's side of this story is just as revealing. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told shareholders in May 2026 that entering the cloud computing business was, in his words, definitely on the table, framing it as a way to prove Meta's massive AI infrastructure spending generates revenue beyond improvements to its own advertising and social products. One plausible explanation is that the market interpreted the story less as "Meta found a new revenue stream" and more as "Meta has more AI computing capacity than it currently needs for its own products," which raises uncomfortable questions about whether its enormous capex is outpacing its own internal AI roadmap. Renting out capacity to a competitor is a reasonable business move. It's also, potentially, a signal that the company building the capacity doesn't have an immediate use for all of it.

How This Compares to Anthropic's Bigger Bet on SpaceX

In May 2026, Anthropic signed a three-year, $45 billion agreement with Elon Musk's SpaceX for access to more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs, including H100, H200, and GB200 accelerators, housed at SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center in Memphis. It's physical chip access. Anthropic has world-class models and tens of billions in revenue, and it still can't fully serve its own paying customers without going hat in hand to a rival's data centers.
